This was late 1962 and on these tapes they are only playing for around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

The tapes were done over several days by King Taylor. The one here is the edited version

with only Beatles performance(s). The Beatles challenged the release

and said they didn't know they were being recorded. You have most of it correct.

Portions of The Beatles' final Star-Club performances (along with other acts)

were recorded by the club's stage manager, Adrian Barber, for Ted Taylor.

Ted Taylor said Lennon verbally agreed to the group being recorded in exchange

for Taylor providing the beer during their performances (which sounds perfectly

plausible). Allen Williams (The Beatles' booking agent at the time) recalled that

a total of about three hours was recorded over three or four sessions between

Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Love Me Do had been released, and the Beatles (contractually obligated to fulfill the gigs

for November and December) were reluctant to go to Germany, as their popularity was beginning to climb.

Taylor said he had offered to sell the tapes to Epstein in the mid-1960s, but that Epstein

did not consider them to be of commercial value and offered only £20. Ted Kingsize

Taylor, started to market the tapes in 1973. The tapes were eventually bought by

Paul Murphy, head of Buk Records. Murphy formed a new company, Lingasong,

offshore, specifically for the project as he anticipated a lawsuit.

Murphy made up a BS story that the Tapes

were from Spring of 1962, prior to the Beatles Parlophone signing, and
"Ringo was sitting in" for legal reasons. The Beatles lost a law suit to block
the tapes. Subsequent repacking of the Beatles (and sometimes others listed as Beatles)
Star Club occurred until the Sony reissue in the 1990's brought forth another
Beatle lawsuit. Lingasong's CD release of the original set prompted another lawsuit from
The Beatles in 1996; the case was decided in 1998 in favour of The Beatles,
who were granted ownership of the tapes and exclusive rights to their use.
Harrison appeared in person to provide evidence in the case, and his testimony
was cited as an important factor in the judge's decision. Harrison characterised the claim that
Lennon gave Taylor permission for the recording as "a load of rubbish", and added:
"One drunken person recording another bunch of drunks does not constitute business deals
. I don't know if Adrian Barber or Ted Taylor was drunk, the Beatles were drunk on some the cuts,
(flubsbed notes, mistakes, false starts), it's a darn shame that this is all that exists
of Hamburg years outside of Cry for a Shadow and Ain't She Sweet recordings
(both with Best on Drums).
Essentially, the Beatles as a Rock and Roll Cover Band.
