Look what he did with the title, in what way he helped promote chess, I firmly believe the greatness of a player can also be measured little bit outside the board. IMHO, in 1975 Karpov would have easily beaten Fischer!!
My top 5 will always be:
1) Kasparov
2) Lasker
3) Anand
4) Morphy
5) Karpov

wheres Magnus Carlson ? he beat Karporov and tied Kasporav when he was 13... and spassky Beat bobby fischer numerous times.. infact fisher spent years reading spasskys book full of 300_ games spassky was in . and he memorized every strategy// so your #1 only beat #9 once.....
